Contemporary mandalas, acrylic/mixed media
Mandala (mahn-dah-la) is the Sanskrit word for circle, the most basic form of sacred geometry. Circular forms, combined with spirals, squares, triangles and crosses, form a symbolic language found throughout the world. Mandala art generally has a central focal point and is symmetrical. These designs have been used as tools for spiritual contemplation, healing and transformation. They transmit a sense of integration, balance, and unity. Gazing at a mandala integrates the right and left brain for an increased sense of calm focus.
I use basic tools to create these images - rulers and compasses and protractors. There is great satisfaction in creating mandalas 'from scratch.' Painting them puts me into a meditative and joy-filled state, and I believe this energy emanates from them. Combined with their vibrant colors and harmonious designs, mandalas are powerful and life-affirming.
